Fans of the historical romances of Sabrina Jeffries, Loretta Chase, and Jo Beverly will enjoy this sexy, National Readers' Choice Award winner by New York Times bestselling author Candice Hern.
Beatrice, Lady Somerfield, is too busy acting as chaperone for her headstrong niece to take her friends' advice to find a lover. Until a dark stranger at a masquerade ball makes her realize what she's been missing. When she finally discovers his identity as the Marquess of Thayne, the very man she has practically been pushing into her niece's arms as the Catch of the Season, Beatrice is horrified. But Thayne is thoroughly captivated by Beatrice, and finds himself increasingly drawn to the beautiful, sensual, more mature and sophisticated Lady Somerfield, and soon discovers he wants more than a love affair. Beatrice, however, has vowed never to marry again. But when their private fling leads to public scandal, more than one life is turned upside down.
"Effervescent, unconventional, and brimming with honest sensuality." Library Journal (starred review)
"A rare reading experience. Leaves you begging for more." Romantic Times (Top Pick)
"Candice Hern writes as an artist paints—with beautiful lines and special attention to details. The final piece of work is something to treasure. The May/December romance between Beatrice and Gabriel only made their love affair even more special, and Ms. Hern graces this topic with elegance. The final declaration of their love is unforgettable." – Romance Reader at Heart (Top Pick)

I bought this book looking for an afternoon of escape without stress and the book delivered that.Character driven plots are my favorite usually as I find suspense to be distracting. This book had just the right amount of sexual tension, angst and resolution. The writing is great quality and the characters are unique and likeable.
I am very partial to historicals but find the same cliched plot devices to be boring at times...you know..how every titled man's father is dead and they all fall in love with willowy, perky breasted young but somehow wise beyond her years 18-23 year old girls. All these men are somehow wicked and jaded and never dally with innocents until *the h* comes along. This book is different. The H has a functional family and seems to a normal likeable guy (except he was a tad too cavalier at first about taking a mistress while he was married..though he gives up that idea fairly quickly...to his credit). The h is older, not a virgin (thank God!) and has a regular body. The chemistry between has less to with lightning striking him from her perfect bosoms and more to do with two people who understand and like each other and see something special in each other.
If you like this book you may also enjoy Loretta Chase and Mary Balogh.

Just One of Those Flings The Merry Widows Book 2 edition by Candice Hern Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The Merry Widows series is based on 5 widows who promise to take lovers and reveal every juicy tidbit to the others. The concept seems a bit too modern for Regency London, but if you put that aside the premise, the story is a fun read with cougars seducing younger men, the kama sutra and the inevitable, but still enjoyable, tension between the lead characters before they can accept their love for each other and step into the parson's mousetrap. Candice Herne had done a lot of research about the era, so I must believe that where the plot seems more modern it is a deliberate choice. However, only the sticklers for 100% historical accuracy will complain. For anyone who enjoys romance, Byronic heros and the elegance that was the Regency, will have fun reading the series.
Another story with emotions and humour and what's lovely is the vulnerability of the main characters of this whole series - shows the feelings and unsure-ness we face in our relationships. And of course the beauty of being in love...
I frankly don't understand the 2-star review! Perhaps they read another book entirely or needed the story of the first of the Merry Widows series to flesh out the characters? In any case, I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this story and especially loved the importance given to the simple words, "I love you." I plan on using them more in my life! Thank you Candice, and hurry with the third novel in the series, please!
Another Merry Widows fling leads the hero on an intrigueing path. The Marquess of Thayne comes to the ball and couldn't help but notice a tall, elegant woman dressed as Artemis. He is concerned that she may not be available, but after 8 years in India, "Artemis's" coloring was a treat to the eyes. First he asks her to dance, and then...
I have read many of Candice Hern 's book and enjoyed them all.
Candice Hern takes a classic romantic situation and makes it fresh and fun. I won't re-explain the story; the synopsis is above. But I love "surprise surprise!" stories, and Ms. Hern plays this one out with a deft hand. The characters are engaging, and I especially connected with Lady Beatrice as an older heroine. I've been collecting Candice Hern's books on my new , and I'm glad to add this one! I know I'll read it again.
I just loved their interaction. They were so great together. I do think that he flew off the handle a bit about her friends knowing the details of their relationship because his friend knew too. Other than that, I really liked the heroine's friends and how protective they are with each other. I read this story first because the plot appealed to me but the little bit mentioned about Marianne from the first one made me go buy that one. I do not know if I want to read about Grace and Rochland because they are a bit too prudish and rakish sounding to me. This is a great book that can stand alone from the others though.
There is a lot to be said about escaping in a good book, and that's what Ms. Hern's books are, a good book. Nothing exceptional about them. The inconsequential tertiary parties are barely mentioned and only brought out for show for specific purpose, like to blurt out an important message. There is no real relationship felt between all members of a family.
There is no exception made for Lady Somerfield and her daughters. There was a closer relationship between Gabriel and his parents, and even he and his best friend than from Beatrice and her brood.
The setting was a constant that felt right, like it just belonged, due to Ms. Hern's obvious ability to write a good story. No real surprises, no real "Aw" moments, just a nice, relaxing read with a HEA.
